Due to COVID 19 we have found a lot of traction of people towards ZOOM for virtual meetings or daily hangouts or spending a good time with friends and families through this app. Zoom has been trending on app stores in India in recent weeks, too, in a surprise as enterprise services rarely get traction with consumers in the country.
But recently we have seen on news or lot forward through WhatsApp messages that ZOOM is not safe and Indian advised government advised employees to not use it for official work. he Cyber Coordination Centre (CyCord) of India’s ministry of home affairs said in a 16-page (PDF) advisory. “Platform not for use by government officers/officials for official purposes,” said Press Bureau of India in a statement. The advisory includes guidelines for users who still wish to use Zoom for their private communications.
So I completely agree on Indian governments decision on for banning ZOOM for Govt Institutions and Govt Employee due sensitive data protection policies but in general, if we all are using it for normal day to day chats or hangouts or urgent meeting then I guess we should take some the points which needs to be addressed while using ZOOM app with the objective of security configurations:
- Setting new user ID and password for each meeting
- Enabling waiting Room, so that every user can enter only when host conducting meeting admits him
- Disabling join before host
- Allowing Screen Sharing by host Only
- Disabling “Allow removed participants to re-join”
- Restricting/disabling file transfer option (if not required)
- Locking meeting, once all attendees have joined
- Restricting the recording feature.
- To end meeting (and not just leave, if you are an administrator)
In fact I recommend you of you are using ZOOM the please also go through some the security concerns in detail which are available on ZOOO.US Security Guidelines and also they release announcement on their site about Zoom Hits Milestone on 90-day Security Plan, Releases Zoom 5.0
